Overtime Rule Changes: What Does the FLSA Say?

On May 18, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor updated their rules on overtime pay. This could end up affecting more than four million workers nationwide. The Fair Labor Standards Act (“FLSA”) was passed in 1938 in an effort to address concerns about the exploitation of blue-collar workers made to work more than the standard 40 hours a week without extra pay. Almost a century later, the White House just announced its plan to propose new rules that will drastically increase the number of people eligible to receive overtime pay. This plan focuses on bringing relief to America’s middle class and memorializes the Administration’s observation that: “[a] hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay.”

The Holiday Nobody is Celebrating

You may not know that today – April 8, 2014 – is actually a holiday.  But it’s one that doesn’t exactly call for a celebration.

Equal Pay Day is a date chosen each year that symbolizes how far into the new year a woman must work to earn what her male counterparts earned during the prior year.  It falls each year on a Tuesday, to symbolize how far into the new work week women must work to earn what mean earned the previous week.
