Sexual Assault Cases: Biased Against Male Students?

In 2011, the U.S. Department of Education, under the instruction of the Obama Administration, sent a letter to colleges and universities across the country clarifying (and in the opinion of many, expanding) the schools’ obligations under Title IX to investigate allegations of sexual harassment and assault on campus. Many incidents of sexual assault on campus are – rightly or wrongly – adjudicated by colleges and universities rather than courts of law. The changes introduced in the “Dear Colleague” letter are making waves in communities across the country.


Overtime Rule Changes: What Does the FLSA Say?

On May 18, 2016, the U.S. Department of Labor updated their rules on overtime pay. This could end up affecting more than four million workers nationwide. The rule changes the standard for determining which workers are eligible for overtime pay under the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The FLSA governs both public and private workers.


Georgia Legislature Considers New Anti-Discrimination Law

The State of Georgia may have an anti-discrimination law on the books. This legislative session includes the introduction of House Bill 849 titled the “Georgia Civil Rights in Public Accommodations Act.” The Bill was introduced by the chairman of the House Judiciary Non-Civil Committee Rep. Rich Golick and has wide bipartisan support. The Bill would ban businesses from turning away customers based on their race, color, sex, religion or national origin and applies to places of public accommodation including hotels, restaurants, gas stations, entertainment venues and other service industries across the State of Georgia.


Strange Laws in Georgia

Strange laws that regulate a variety of activities exist all over the United States. They tend to be limited to smaller geographic areas (like counties or cities). There are many strange Georgia laws.

Are Employees Entitled to Vacation in Georgia?

Federal law, specifically the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets the national minimum standard for wages and only requires payment for time actually worked. Some states have laws that provide their citizens with additional benefits including paid or unpaid vacation. Georgia does not have a state law governing wages and benefits, so the FLSA standards are also the standards in Georgia, and paid or unpaid vacation is not required.
